Harvey Hamilton Allen, Sr. MD

WINSTON SALEM Harvey Hamilton Allen, Sr., 87, a physician and distinguished community member, passed on Saturday, March 31, 2018.

Dr. Allen received the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in chemistry from Lincoln University, Lincoln University, Pennsylvania, completed a year of study in the graduate school of physiology at New York University, and received his medical degree from Meharry Medical College in 1957. After completing a year of general rotating internship and five years of a general surgery residency at George W. Hubbard Hospital of Meharry Medical College, Dr. Allen served two years in the United States Army as a surgeon at the 34th General Hospital, La Chappelle, St. Mesmin, France. He was honorably discharged as a Major in the U. S. Army Medical Corps Reserve in 1968.

On July 1, 1965, Dr. Allen opened his office for the practice of general surgery in the Bruce Building at 6th Street and Patterson Avenue in Winston-Salem, joining his father, Dr. Hobart T. Allen, who also had a medical office in the building.

After forty-five years of practice in Winston-Salem, Dr. Allen closed his medical office on June 15, 2010. In 2003, Dr. Allen received the Lifetime Achievement Award from The Winston-Salem Chronicle in recognition of his dedication to his patients and his service to his profession and his community.

Dr. Allen is survived by his wife of sixty years, Simona Atkins Allen: two children, Gail Allen, M.D. and Harvey H. Allen, Jr., M.D.: grandson, Harvey H. Allen III; sister, Jean Allen Payne; brother, Theodore L. Allen M.D., (Carolyn), and several cousins, nephews, and nieces.
