Political affiliations and opinions aside, America is now on the cusp of unexplored terrain. In this season of tumultuous civil discourse, the values of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity that form the core of the American creed are in jeopardy. Additionally, the principles of diversity and equity are being challenged, as is the health and welfare of marginalized and underrepresented groups. Finally, in 2024, we are witnessing moments reminiscent of the 20th century suffrage movement, during which women’s rights and welfare were under attack. We face daunting challenges, so we must draw upon the resilience instilled by our creator and demonstrated by our ancestors and continue our fight for fairness.

The Old North State Medical Society remains committed to meeting challenges, bridging divides and speaking on behalf of the voiceless. We will persist in our efforts as we stand ready to walk paths that others may avoid. As James Weldon Johnson so eloquently penned, “We have come over a way that with tears has been watered. We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered.”

We will follow the footsteps of those who fought for equity before us and work tirelessly in pursuit of #healthequity for all North Carolinians. May God give us strength and bless us all.
